Reading and Math Minutes (R/M Min.)

What are reading and math minutes? In second grade, I am asking that students read for at least 20 minutes each day (Monday-Thursday) and practice a math skills for at least 5 minutes each day (Monday-Thursday).

Reading Minutes: It is very important that students practice reading every day to improve their fluency and comprehension. Reading minutes can include reading books sent home as part of a homework assignment, reading a recipe when helping cook dinner, reading a newspaper or magazine article, reading notes sent home from school, or reading a book for pleasure independently/to an adult/with an adult's help.

Math Minutes: Second graders will be working to memorize their addition and subtraction facts this year. Using Reflex Math is one tool students can use to improve their speed and accuracy. Reflex Math will be assigned as Math Minutes twice a week as homework. On the nights when Reflex Math is not assigned, students may choose to work on other math skills we are learning in class. Examples include time, money, word problems, writing numbers in word form, shapes and patterns, etc. On nights when students are assigned math homework, the time they spend completing their homework can count as their math minutes.
