IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Dear Parents,

Just a reminder for afterschool pick up.  If your child is going to Kid’s Corner, this does not apply.

When I walk your child out to the front.  Your child should be sitting on the ground watching for your car.  There is NO RUNNING AROUND in front of the school.  They should wait to eat or take out any toys from their backpack until they get in your car.

If you are in front, your child should be NEXT TO YOU until you leave campus. They should not be running around. They should be right next to you.  Do not leave your child with another parent.  If you leave, take your child with you.

If you are in your car and are waiting for a 3rd, 4th or 5th grade sibling, your 1st grader should be in your car with you. Your first grade child should not be playing with their friends, they should be in your car.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Lisa Turner

Evacuation Drill 3-18

Please make sure your child is wearing comfortable walking shoes.  Students should also have a jacket as the temperature is about 59 degrees tomorrow.
Thank you.
Ms. Turner

Dear Soleado Families,

The safety of your child as well as the safety of the school staff and support personnel is very important to PVPUSD and safety is a number one priority here at Soleado. In order to maintain a safe environment for our students to study and learn, it is necessary that we practice our emergency and crisis response plans by having drills designed to exercise our procedures.

We will be having a school wide evacuation drill on Tuesday, March 18th at 10:15 AM. The intent of this drill is to familiarize our students with the safest evacuation route to Peninsula High School. We will be walking the entire route for this drill. During this drill children will be following the directions given by their teacher and staff members. The Lomita Sheriff's Department will be working with us to ensure all streets are crossed safely. The message to students will be that we are practicing evacuating campus and walking as a school off campus. If you do not want your child to participate please email me at [email protected]

EVACUATION DRILLS
During an “Evacuation Drill”, students will be safely escorted along a designated evacuation route to one of our pre-determined evacuation sites. At the conclusion of the drill, all students will be escorted back to the school.

For the safety of everyone involved and to maintain order, we respectfully ask that you would abide by the following during these drills:
• Do not come to the school campus
• Do not call the school offices (as they will be busy with the drill or actual emergency)
• Do not contact students or staff members via cell phone or social media (as they will be busy with the drill or actual emergency)
• Avoid social media posts. Correct information will be disseminated through our automated system as soon as possible.
• Please make sure that your contact information is current at all times so that you can be reached without delay in the event of an emergency.
• In the event of an actual emergency evacuation, you will receive notification where to pick up your child as soon as practicable.

Please remember that these safety practice drills are done to help maintain our schools as a safe place to learn and work.

February News

Dear Parents,

Can you believe it? We are now more than half way through First Grade! Yikes! The rest of the school year is going to fly by! Here are some upcoming events.

Monday, February 3 was the 100th day of school. I hope your kiddos have fun celebrating being 100 days smarter.

February 14 is Valentine’s Day but it’s also a school holiday this year.  We will celebrate Valentine’s Day on Thursday, February 13.  We will be passing out Valentine’s day cards from 2:00 to 2:30. There are 28 students in our class.  If you decide to pass out cards, your child must write one for each child in the class. Your child should write his/her name and his/her friend’s name on the Valentine.  I ask that the names be written so it ensures that each child gets one. Here is the school policy on Valentine’s Day:

Valentine’s Day: If your child wishes to give Valentines to his/her classmates, please refrain from giving anything more than one bite-size piece of candy. If you choose to send candy, you must check in with the classroom teacher to make sure there are no allergies to be aware of. A Valentine’s Card is always appropriate.

On Friday, February 14 and Monday, February 17, there is no school.  I hope you all have a wonderful long weekend.

Friday, February 28 is Art At Your Fingertips! Please join us.

Sniffles continue to be on the rise!  Thank you to those families who have brought in a box or two of tissues.  If your child has the sniffles, may I suggest you provide our class with a box of Kleenex.

Sincerely,

Ms.  Turner

Minimum Day on Monday, September 9

Dear PVPUSD Families,

We hope this message finds you well and you are keeping cool this weekend. We wanted to inform you that, due to the forecasted extreme heat on Monday, the district has decided to implement a minimum day schedule for all students. This decision has been made in order to prioritize the health and safety of students and staff.

On Monday, classes will be dismissed early to help minimize exposure to the high temperatures. Please refer to the specific dismissal times for each grade level.

Grade Level

Start Time

Dismissal Time

Grades TK-5

8:30AM

12:00PM

For families in need of childcare on Monday in grades TK-8 we will still have staff on-site for supervision, meal service will be available with Food Services for students staying beyond their dismissal time and cooling spaces are available. Supervision and meal service will also be available for students in grades 9-12 that stay beyond their dismissal time.

Additionally, we would like to share some heat prevention tips to help you, and your family stay safe and healthy during this period of extreme heat:

1. Stay Hydrated: Encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Sending them to school with a refillable water bottle is highly recommended. Water refill stations have been set up on campus to encourage students and faculty to stay hydrated by refilling personal reusable bottles. In cases where individuals do not have a refillable bottle, free bottled water is provided by Food Services during days with excessive heat.

2. Dress Appropriately: Dress your child in light, loose-fitting clothing and apply sunscreen before coming to school to protect against sunburn.

3. Limit Physical Activity: Advise your child to avoid strenuous physical activities during the hottest parts of the day to prevent overheating. Staff have been advised to do the same.

4. Seek Shade: Encourage your child to stay in shaded areas whenever possible and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

5. Cool Down: Remind your child to take breaks in air-conditioned spaces or utilize cooling stations, such as the Multipurpose Room, library, and designated classrooms with air conditioning available. Locations vary by site.

These proactive measures demonstrate a commitment to creating a safe and comfortable learning environment for all school sites, regardless of having access to air-conditioned classrooms or not. Unfortunately, we lack district-wide air conditioning in all classrooms and buildings, including our district office buildings. Even where they exist, they are outdated. Due to their age and constant use, the systems are challenged to maintain a consistent temperature and compressors are starting to fail, which is causing further issues at sites that otherwise more sites will cool and whereas some have no routine issues with cooling. We have proactively applied and continue to apply to grants where we are eligible for facility funding focused on air quality, efficiency and cooling. In addition, the Board recently voted on a resolution to place a bond on the ballot in November and ventilation, including air conditioning, is included on the proposed project list by site, found here.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we navigate these challenging weather conditions. The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priorities, and we are taking proactive measures to ensure a healthy learning environment for everyone.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in promoting a healthy and safe school environment.

In partnership,

Devin Serrano, Ph.D.

Classroom Supplies

Thank you to those of you who have already taken this opportunity to purchase your school supplies through our optional School Supply Program! We have been able to purchase supplies for ALL students, so it's NOT TOO LATE to get your order in to receive your supplies by the first week of school! For this one set price, your child will receive ALL of their school supplies for the entire school year--no need to hunt for all of the things on your teacher's list, or worry about replenishing items during the year. This cost will also help cover the classroom supplies teachers use regularly like specialty paper, markers, folders, art materials, etc.

The current supply lists are posted on the school website if you elect to purchase them on your own. Remember, your contribution to this OPTIONAL program helps support additional materials teachers are able to provide outside of the traditional School Supplies listed online.

International Dot Day was created to encourage people of all ages to harness their creativity. The inspiration behind the event is the children’s book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. It relates the tale of a teacher who challenges one of his female pupils to take courage in her abilities and from a dot on a page the youngster goes on to make her mark.

This year International Dot Day is Friday, September 15.

For this weeks Family Project, your child should place the black dot anywhere on the white paper.  He/She should then create something.  The rest of the family can also help decorate this page.
Thank you!
Lisa Turner
Please bring in your creation on Friday which is International Dot Day.
