parents my name is River Faye and I'm the reading Specialist or Silver Spur and souleiado and Ida I need to welcome you to the reading club program this year being that we won't be needing it back to school night had a few things that I wanted to go over with you so welcome so the big picture for this year in Reading intervention or reading club is the kids like to call it is that we provide targeted teaching and practice of literacy skills in order for kids to move ahead quicker than they might if they were just working on reading with their teacher so my lessons are all in small groups during the school day and a goal of my program is to make things more useful and less stressful for both your student and your in Reading Club we use three different programs this year and the first of which is called leveled literacy intervention or lli it's a program by fountas and Pinnell and this is the program where we get most of the books we read in our group the books are Level so they're just right for each kid and they're a mix of fiction and nonfiction books it's a rigorous small group instruction and its design kids who find reading and writing difficult and who need to get to grade-level competency it's exciting that in and it empowers both kids and teachers everything so I glanced LOL I can just a small group instruction as I said it's systematically designed with lessons that are intensive and it supports the literacy teaching that goes on in the classroom it's fast-paced so kids don't get bored and it engages readers with books that are just right for them World season 2 programs this year to support our teaching we use hegarty for phonemic awareness and I'll explain what funny make awareness is in just a moment and we're also using the orton-gillingham approach to teach phonics and spelling and sight words so you might ask what is 20 - 20 Ms awareness is the ability to understand that spoken words are made up of individual sounds called phonemes it's one of the best predictors or whether a child is going to be a successful reader and that's why we try to really push any more awareness with our K to students because it will help them become better readers as they go along I'm on Phonics on the other hand is the awareness day words are made up of letters and putting different combinations of letters together will give you all the words that we have in our english-language so for phonics instruction spelling which go hand-in-hand were you orton-gillingham program and this is a very structured approach on it breaks down reading and Spelling into smaller skills involving letters and sounds and I use this program all the way from Kate fifth grade of course it changes as the kids get older but they start learning just individual letters down and then by third grade they're into you know all kinds of short vowel pattern than consonant pattern for any more complex words and then for 4th and 5th grade we focus more on teaching spelling patterns and how to use a sewing patterns in their writing this is the first approach to be to be considered multi-sensory so it's really great to help kids remember because we're not just reading words or spelling words but we're doing all kinds of things to try lock it into their brain so we are you know for us forth with a little kids drawing letters in sand and tracing letters with markers are crayons and then feeling the bumps that the fans make on the paper and all of those things are great for all kids to help them remember what they need to know but they found that it's especially effective for kids to have dyslexia or other reading difficulties and so are they said we'll use orton-gillingham not only did phonics but also spelling and sight words so here are some things that our program is and is not the reading reading intervention on is small group lessons during the school day it's very Hands-On as I just mentioned will also be doing some weed allowed plays with some of the groups at the end of the year and of course we're reading real books we encourage reading at home you'll be Bart fare from your students will be bringing home some decodable readers that they should be able to read with you and to you pretty independently so please encourage them to do so if they come home and we'll be fighting you with book ideas and lots of info on literacy and I'll show you my my website in a little bit we also remind kids in our program of all of the literacy Concepts that there with their classroom teacher so what is does not happen in Reading intervention I don't get homework other than the books that come home for you to read but that's on your own time I don't have assignments that are due or graded and I don't help them with specific class work so when I go to pull your student out of class for reading club they're not going to bring there in a language arts workbook with them I have my own program in my own lessons that will do at that time instead okay so a little bit about me I've been a teacher in Palos Verdes since 1999 I taught first grade for 21 I've also taught reading and math intervention classes and I do private classes in reading and writing as well my credentials include a multiple subject teaching credential I also have a reed special Prudential and I have a master's degree in English language arts and my two schools currently are silly Otto and are Wednesdays and Fridays and Silver Spur on Monday Tuesdays and Thursdays and so because I'm not each school every day the best way to contact me rather than my phone is through my email which is listed at the bottom of your screen do some resources for you the main reason will be my website which is here and I'll show you how to use it in just a moment when we were doing just informed and I also utilize Google Classroom a lot more I still do have Google Classroom straight to my group so I'll be sending out are emails to parents with how to join the Google classroom and basically it just has more reading resources for you it will not have any homework assignments that you need to do. It's really your choice whether or not you want to join the Google let me go ahead and show you my website so you can go to either of my school website souleiado or Silver Spur can you just look me up under the teachers pages but this is a direct link to my page at souleiado and both Pages have the exact same information so it doesn't matter which school you're at but you can see here on this side hide in the blue we have all of these different resources that you can look at my book list I have ideas for summer reading specific things for K2 students which are the majority of my she wants some resources for phonics as I mentioned on the Google Classroom links will go home to you and you can join if you like and then just some of their information about how to motivate your students to read learning extensions that you might find fun at home little bit more about me as I just talked about and I also have a classroom donation page on Amazon so if you're interested in donating to our classroom you can click there and see what kind of things we need thank you so much in advance of call Uncle back to our slideshow that is basically the end of our presentation thank you so much for letting me be a part of your child's team this year I look forward to talking with you and of course working with your student and please do you know me if you have any questions
